Morning Fog

We woke this morning to a thick fog - a very rare occurrence around here. I had to drive west into the country a little ways this morning and the scenery was amazing. Here are some pictures from the trip. The fog began to lift as I stopped to take pictures.

on the way to the store

On a very early morning walk to the store - cloud banks anchored over the mountains with Long's Peak barely revealed.

snowmelt

Some scenes from an evening late last week - the snow and ice are finally starting to melt away. Where is spring when you need it? It's been getting into the 40's during the day now so that's an improvement.

On the Ice

It's been so cold for so long that the stream in the park has been frozen solid for days. I walked along it for a ways yesterday morning. The sun was barely up and hiding behind a bank of clouds, not the usual sunny winter morning. I could see the ice in place was about six inches thick and certainly hard enough to walk on, so I did, looking at the patterns and leaves embedded in the ice.

Finally

The white amarylis is finally blooming. It didn't catch up with the other two but is now open at last. It's nice to have flowers blooming indoors when it's so rotten outside.

Rabbit

While out taking pictures I spotted this bunny, munching on dried grasses in the melted patches of snow. He was relatively fearless, next to a parking lot. I guess he's used to cars and people.

cold morning

Here's a picture I took at 8 AM out the window. The temperature at the time was -10 F. It's since warmed up a bit.

remembering the warmth

It's about 8 degrees out and has been snowing all day. Like Northern Europe and the eastern US we seem to be stuck in this polar flow and it's really cold. But here are a few pictures from a recent trip to Mexico, a reminder that it's not cold everywhere. Wish I were back there again sinking my toes in the sand. I did put the starfish back in the water where I found it after looking at it - it didn't seem to mind and went back to clinging to its rock in the tide pool with the other creatures. Seagulls were pesky.

New Years Day hike

It's a family tradition to hike somewhere on New Years Day and the weather was nice. We went to Sandstone Ranch park and hiked along the new bike trail  and across the new bridge over the river. There's still snow most places and rabbit, fox and prairie dog tracks were everywhere. It was a beautiful afternoon.

Short and Tall

Two of my amarylis are now blooming.See this older post. It makes me wonder what determines the length of the stems. One is super tall, the other quite short. Other years they were similar in height. So what did I do different? Both are pretty but my fav is the tall one.
